Examples of purposes of classroom language:

A CLIL teacher should
  • activate prior knowledge
  • present new ideas
  • encourage learners to collaborate
  • develop learners' understanding
  • try to find out if there are any difficulties with subject content
  • help learners develop thinking skills and make links
  • encourage creative talk
  • monitor learning
    (observe and listen to learners as they work in the classroom)
  • respond to learning needs

Learners: use mostly LOTS for responding

Open questions

Learners: to develop problem solving and HOTS

What would happen to a food chain if plants died?
How could the result of the match have been different?

By increasing wait time, learners can improve the quality of their answers, lenghten a discussion, comment on answers, be more confident to answer subject questions in a non-native language.
